About Us
Welcome to the Going-Green-Challenge About page!
We are the Phillips family--an average, family of three from the heart of the Midwest. We work hard, play hard and love a challenge.
So, why are we going green? This picture sums it up for me. This is my son, discovering his first squirrel through the backyard window (with the help of his Dad.)
As I watched him, I did what many parents do. I thought about his future and wondered what the world will be like when he's my age.
Before he was born, I committed to breastfeeding and giving him organic foods.
I never thought much about eco friendly diapers, recycling batteries, or the recycle symbol on the bottom of baby food containers. One of the many things they don't tell you about having children...they generate TONS of trash.
We've been recycling for a while and buy organic when it's affordable. We carry reusable shopping bags and try not to be wasteful.
But....
I have a passion for long hot showers and a dirty little secret lies in my son's disposable diapers.
My husband defines the midwestern, meat-and-potato-eating-carnivore and has a thing for buying toxic cleaners.
We aren't moving to the hills and living off the land. I doubt we could survive a week without air conditioning or our favorite fast food fix. Still, we are committed to reducing our carbon footprints. Small changes add up.
So, how are we going to do this? Baby steps! We are gathering tips for living green and putting them to the test. Each month we hope to take on a new going green challenge.
