Go Portable with Energy Efficient Electric Heaters
Unless you have an efficient central heating system, adding a space heater to frequently used rooms may be beneficial in your home. The price couldn't be better; online reviews list the top models for under $75.
Here are a few things to consider before purchasing energy efficient electric heaters.
Lack of the Logo
Like the clothes dryer, you won't find the Energy Star logo on any type of space heater. Most electric space heaters use similar amounts of energy, making it difficult to label one type as superior in efficiency.
When you are comparing two new models, keep this in mind: the level of energy used is not what typically makes one model more energy efficient than another. Energy saving features and how the space heater is used will determine superior efficiency.
Room Size
Although most space heaters are portable, have an idea which room it will be used in the most. Consider the size of the room before purchasing the unit. If the heater is too large for a room, it may not be efficient to run. Also consider which rooms to close off.
Thermostat
Unlike older models that constantly run, new versions of space heaters have thermostats. Setting a maximum temperature avoids overheating a room and wasting energy.
Timers
Timers are a great addition to portable heaters. Instead of running it continuously, set the timer to start heating the kitchen shortly before breakfast.
Turning Down the Central Heat
To maximize efficiency, turn down the central heating system. Determine how low heat can be reduced and in which rooms.
Safety
Although new space heaters are much safer than older models, safety should still be a primary concern. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, an estimated 25,000 residential fires each year are associated with space heaters. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends purchasing only new models with the Underwriter's Laboratory (UL) label.
