Buying an Energy Star Freezer

Buying in bulk and storing food in an Energy Star freezer is a money saver for many families. Affordable and more efficient than most upright units, energy efficient chest freezers can be a worthy investment if they are used effectively.

To get the most out your deep freezer purchase, consider these 5 things:

Foods can be safely frozen indefinitely, but here are guidelines to maintain freshness:

1-2 months: lunchmeat, pizza, & bacon

2-3 months: casseroles, baked breads, cooked meat, soups, raw tuna & salmon

4-6 months: cooked chicken & fish, raw pork roast & chops

6-9 months: raw beef & chicken, hard cheese & butter

Stocking Up
Do you have a garden or buy in bulk? Maybe you have a large family or often host big parties.

For the most energy efficient freezer, it should be well stocked.

Preparing extra meals and freezing them is a great time and money saver, especially if you buy ingredients when they are on sale.

Whatever your situation, commit to having a well stocked freezer for optimal efficiency.

Capacity
Determine how large the chest freezer should be. Four to five cubic feet per person is a good starting point. Adjust this number according to your needs.

Space
Determine where the freezer will be kept and make sure there is ample space. Be sure to measure doorways and the stairwell if it's going in the basement.

Energy Star Logo & Energy Guide Label
Look for the Energy Star Logo. An Energy Star freezer with a volume of more than 7.75 cubic feet is 10% more energy efficient than those without the seal. Be sure to read the Energy Guide label for energy usage information.

Check for Rebates
Before heading to the store, check the Energy Star rebate finder for information in your area. Double check with sales staff about possible retailer and manufacturer rebates.
