How to Make a Carpet Cleaner With Household Staples
Have a spill, but not sure what to clean it with? Try a homemade carpet cleaner that is gentle to the planet.
With any solution, ALWAYS test a small area first.
Homemade Carpet Cleaner I
3 tablespoons vinegar
24 oz warm water
Mix in a spray bottle. Spray directly on the stain. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes. Clean with a sponge, soap and water.
This has become a favorite homemade all purpose cleaner. I'm still adjusting to the smell, however.
Homemade Carpet Cleaner II
1/4 cup Borax
1/2 cup baking soda
Blot stain with cloth, removing as much moisture as possible. Pour cleaner on stain. Let sit for 30-60 minutes. Vacuum.
Homemade Stain Remover For Tough Stains
1 tablespoon baking soda
3 tablespoons vinegar
2 cups water
Mix baking soda and vinegar. Add water and stir. Pour solution into a spray bottle. Scrub cleaner over stain with a brush. Wait 5-10 minutes and blot dry.
Homemade Carpet Shampoo
1/4 cup vinegar
1/4 cup liquid homemade laundry soap
(can use other liquid soap)
1 gallon water
Check the machine first and make sure it doesn't require a special shampoo.
Mix together and add to carpet cleaning machine. Shampoo carpets as usual. This solution can also be added to a spray bottle and used for spot treatment.
Homemade Carpet Deodorizer
2 cups baking soda
10 drops favorite essential oil
Mix ingredients. Sprinkle powder on carpet.
Let sit for 30-60 minutes. Vacuum.

Homemade Carpet Deodorizer II
1/4 cup Borax
1/2 cup corn meal
Mix ingredients. Sprinkle powder on carpet. Let sit for 60 minutes. Vacuum.

For Stubborn Spots, try one of these Homemade Stain Removers:
Pet Stains:
Clean up soiled areas. Blot excess moisture with towel. Allow to air dry. Using a spray bottle, spot treat with the Homemade Carpet Shampoo recipe.
Ink Stains:
Blot excess ink, being careful not to smear it. Add small amount of alcohol. Gently blot until stain disappears. Don't rub! This will further spread the stain.
Blood Stains:
Treat as soon as possible. Using cold water, blot excess blood with cloth or sponge. Try not to smear it. Gently blot until stain disappears. If necessary, add a small amount of club soda or homemade laundry soap and repeat steps.
