Homemade Floor Cleaner

6 Staples of Green Cleaning

Homemade Cleaning Supplies

  • Baking Soda

  • White Vinegar

  • Borax

  • Lemon Juice

  • Washing Soda

  • Castile Soap
  • The most common homemade floor cleaner is easy to mix and works well.

It will be familiar if you have already tried the homemade window cleaner.

The vinegar solution works great and is cost effective. It has become one of my favorite homemade all purpose cleaners.

I love the feeling I get when using non toxic cleaners. It is best for the planet, my son and our pets.

But, I still can't stand the smell of vinegar. The odor lingers more after doing the floors, probably because it's a stronger solution and covers a larger area.

Update: I tried this solution again and added a few drops of lavender essential oil. This definitely helped mask the vinegar smell, but it still lingers.

    Homemade Floor Cleaner Recipes:

    Homemade Vinegar Floor Cleaner

    Homemade Silver Cleaner
    1/2 cup vinegar

    1 gallon hot water

Mix in bucket & mop away!

    General Purpose Floor Cleaner

    2 tablespoons baby shampoo
(organic, if you can find it)

    1 gallon hot water

    Mix and mop!

This is gentle and effective. It makes an excellent laminate floor cleaner. It's also a great to use if you have a little helper.

    Disinfectant Floor Cleaner

    Homemade Silver Polish
    1/4 cup Borax

    1 gallon hot water

Borax can be found in the laundry aisle. This worked well, but I think the vinegar floor cleaner did a better job.

    Tile Floor Cleaner

    1/4 baking soda

    1/4 cup vinegar

1 tablespoon Liquid Homemade Laundry Soap
    (Can also use store bought)

    1-2 gallons hot water

Mix baking soda and dish soap with hot water. Add vinegar & mop until you drop. This is a little more involved, but great for deeper cleaning. It also works well on linoleum floors.

A Different Method is Necessary When Cleaning Hardwood Floors:

Never mop wood floors like you would your kitchen tile. Excessive liquids can damage the wood grain. When mopping with a liquid solution, wring out the mop so it is barely damp.

Water works well on wood floors. The vinegar floor cleaner solution is also a popular choice. Below are several other natural cleaning recipes for wood floors.

    Hardwood Floor Cleaner

    Homemade Silver Cleaner
    1/2 cup lemon juice

    1/2 cup rubbing alcohol

    1/2 cup olive oil

    1 gallon warm water

    Mix and mop!

    Laminate Floor Cleaner

    1 cup vinegar

    1/2 cup lemon juice

    1 tablespoon Homemade Dish Soap
    (Can also use store bought)

    1 gallon hot water

Mix and mop until you drop!

    Tea Hardwood Floor Cleaner

    Homemade Silver Cleaner
    5-10 black teabags

    1/2-1 gallon water

Brew tea and let cool before adding to the mop bucket. This solution can also be added to a spray bottle and used as a spot treatment.

It might seem strange to use tea, but this homemade floor cleaner has been around for years. The tannic acid in tea provides a great shine to wood floors.
