Homemade Playdough Recipe

Looking for a creative way to spend the afternoon? Have some squishy fun with a homemade playdough recipe! We recommend organic ingredients, but use what you have in the pantry.

Edible Playdough Recipes

Edible play dough recipes offer a safe and fun way to involve even the youngest family members. Here are several to try, depending on the ingredients you have on hand.

Peanut Butter Playdough

1 cup peanut butter

1 cup dry milk

3/4 cup honey

flour* (optional)

food coloring (optional)

Put the dry milk in a bowl. Add peanut butter and honey. Ues your hands to mix it all together. Add flour to thicken dough. Mix in a few drops of food coloring. Use raisins and other candy to decorate. *For gluten free playdough, substitute with rice flour.

Store in an air tight container in the refrigerator.



Gluten Free Playdough

8 oz. package cream cheese

1/2 cup dry milk

2 teaspoons honey

raisins (optional)

Blend ingredients in a bowl. Make shapes and decorate apple slices, celery, or rice crackers. Enjoy as an afternoon snack!

Store in an air tight container in the refrigerator.



Oatmeal Playdough

For a clay-like dough that can be painted on when dry, mix the following:

2 cups oatmeal

1 cup flour*

1 cup water

Mix ingredients together in a bowl. Form into shapes. Let dry completely. Paint if desired.

*For gluten free playdough, substitute with rice flour.



Non Edible Playdough Recipes

These homemade playdough recipes typically store longer than edible versions. When refrigerated, they can last for several months. They aren't meant to be eaten, but are made with safe, non-toxic ingredients. Ingesting small amounts will be harmless to the typical child.

*Be sure to keep away from pets; the level of salt can be toxic to them!


Basic Homemade Playdough Recipe

1 cup salt

1 cup flour

3 teaspoons cream of tarter

3 tablespoons olive oil

1 cup water

food coloring (optional)

Add all ingredients to a bowl. Mix with hands. Adjust ingredients accordingly. If dough seems too sticky, mix in a little more flour. Add more water to dryer dough.

Store in an air tight container in the refrigerator for 2-3 months.



Gluten Free Homemade Playdough Recipe

3/4 cup cornstarch

3/4 cup salt

3/4 cup rice flour

3 teaspoons cream of tarter

2 teaspoons olive oil

1 1/2 cup water

food coloring (optional)

Add all ingredients to a saucepan (except food coloring). Cook over medium heat. Stir constantly until thickened in a ball. Remove from pan and let cool. Add food coloring and knead dough. Continue kneading until no longer sticky.

Store in an air tight container in the refrigerator for 2-3 months.
