Recycle Batteries & Buy Rechargeable
for a Better Planet

Can you recycle batteries? Some can be recycled, yes. For those that can't be recycled, there is a proper way to dispose of them. This means they shouldn't be thrown in the garbage for Friday's pick-up.

There are two types of batteries: disposable and rechargeable.

If you are like the average American, you buy an estimated 8 to 10 disposable batteries a year and pitch them when they are out of juice. That number easily doubles if you have children.

Batteries contain chemicals like alkaline, lithium, and nickel-cadmium. What they are made of determines the proper method of disposal.

How to Recycle Batteries:

  1. Gather your old batteries. Collect all types, both single-use and rechargeable. Examples include AAA, AA, C, D, button, and watch batteries.
  2. Designate a place to store used batteries. We keep an old ice cream bucket near our recycling bins.
  3. Before you head out to run errands, check Earth 911 for locations in your area that accept batteries. I was surprised to learn that our local grocer accepts them for recycling.
  4. Drop off at your local retailer.

Old Batteries in Hiding

Batteries made before 1997 contain larger amounts of mercury than newer versions.

In 1996, Congress mandated a reduction in the amount of mercury used in batteries.

Buy Rechargeable Batteries

Replacing disposable batteries with rechargeable is a simple way to join the go green movement.

They can be charged 100's of times and are easier to recycle.

Although the cost of going green with rechargeable batteries will be more initially, it will save you money in the long run.

Another perk...no more battery runs to the drug store on Christmas morning. That's worth every penny of the initial investment.

Recycle Car Batteries

Don't forgot about those dead car batteries you may have stashed in the garage. To recycle car batteries, participate in the AAA Great Battery Round Up on Earth Day.

For year around drop off locations, check with your local automotive shop or Earth 911.

When transporting old car batteries, wear gloves and place in a large bucket.
