Recycle BatteriesCan you recycle batteries? Some can be recycled, yes. For those that can't be recycled, there is a proper way to dispose of them. This means they shouldn't be thrown in the garbage for Friday's pick-up.
There are two types of batteries: disposable and rechargeable. If you are like the average American, you buy an estimated 8 to 10 disposable batteries a year and pitch them when they are out of juice. That number easily doubles if you have children. Batteries contain chemicals like alkaline, lithium, and nickel-cadmium. What they are made of determines the proper method of disposal.
How to Recycle Batteries:
Old Batteries in Hiding![]() In 1996, Congress mandated a reduction in the amount of mercury used in batteries. Recycle these old batteries & keep them away from children. Buy Rechargeable BatteriesReplacing disposable batteries with rechargeable is a simple way to join the go green movement. They can be charged 100's of times and are easier to recycle. Although the cost of going green with rechargeable batteries will be more initially, it will save you money in the long run. Another perk; no more battery runs to the drug store on Christmas morning. That's worth every penny of the initial investment.
Recycle Car BatteriesDon't forgot about those dead car batteries you may have stashed in the garage. To recycle car batteries, participate in the AAA Great Battery Round Up on Earth Day. For year around drop off locations, check with your local automotive shop or Earth 911. When transporting old car batteries, be sure to wear gloves and place in a large bucket.
